Replit Agent 4: You're Not Coding Anymore, You're Directing

Replit Agent 4 launched. Amjad Masad calls it 'directing, not coding.' First impressions from someone who builds with AI daily.

First impressions from researching the launch

Amjad Masad just dropped Replit Agent 4, and the framing is interesting: "Software isnt merely technical work anymore. Its creative."

Ive been digging through the docs, tutorials, and early user feedback. Heres what stands out.

The Big Shift: Parallel Agents

Agent 3 was about autonomy. It could run for hours, self-test, fix bugs. Impressive, but still one-to-one.

Agent 4 introduces parallel agents. Multiple AI agents working on different parts of your project simultaneously. One handles auth, another builds the UI, a third sets up the database. You watch progress on a Trello-style board: Drafts → Active → Ready.

The insight from one tutorial nailed it: "Instead of pair programming with one agent, youre managing a team of agents."

Thats a fundamentally different workflow. Youre not writing code. Youre directing.

The Infinite Canvas

Design exploration now happens on an infinite canvas. Ask for four variants of your UI, get four agents working in parallel, review the options visually, pick the best one.

The key improvement: design and code live in the same environment now. No more exporting from Figma, no more translating mockups. Design freely, then merge directly into production.

For rapid prototyping, this is huge.

Ship Anything

Heres where it gets weird (good weird): Replit Agent 4 doesnt just build apps. From the same project, you can generate:

  • Mobile and web apps
  • Slide decks
  • Animations
  • Landing pages

As one creator put it: "Code is the foundation of all knowledge work." If an agent can write code, it can generate almost any artifact.

Real User Feedback

From the launch:

  • Alex Meyers (Gusto PM): "Makes my life 10x easier. I can show, not tell."
  • Barak Hirchson (Payouts.com): "Game-changer. Matches the speed our team operates at."
  • Doug Rodermund (Zillow): "True collaboration and real-time learning."

These arent theoretical benefits. Product managers are using it to skip the Figma → requirements → dev handoff cycle entirely.

Questions I Still Have

  1. Merge conflicts: When parallel agents touch the same files, how clean is the resolution?
  2. Quality control: More speed usually means more bugs. Hows the testing?
  3. Cost: Parallel execution is Pro/Enterprise only. Whats the pricing math?

My Take

The trajectory is clear: AI coding tools are moving from "assistant" to "team." Cursor gives you a pair programmer. Replit now gives you a small engineering squad.

For MVPs and prototypes, this acceleration matters. The question is whether the output quality scales with the speed.

Ill test it hands-on when I get access and report back.

Replit Agent 4 launched March 12, 2026. Parallel task execution available for Pro and Enterprise users.
